“Nature in unnatural places”
Lyric Hegedus
“Nature in unnatural places” is a series of 3 smooth watercolor and thin line sharpie drawings that show plants interacting with certain parts of the human body. These are supposed to show diverse amounts of symbolism to each viewer kinda like a parable. Each drawing is meant to be unsettling but beautiful at the same time.
I decided to use this as my topic because I love growing and admiring plants but I also live in a home where one of my parents is a collector of creepy and bizarre things like; bones, antiques, framed insects, strange anatomy books, etc. so I took these two things and combined them into something that works for both. I then took two different mediums that do not mix and made them into something with a deep complexity and also a calm flowy delicateness.
Using two mediums that counteract each other was very challenging, especially because if any of the water color were to touch the sharpie it would smudge and basically ruin everything. After a little bit of trial and error I formed a step by step process to make these two mediums co-exist on the same paper in a sort of chaotic harmony that I found both beautiful and abstract. I am very proud of these pieces and hope that they project their messages to others.
